The workshop was first developed in 2018 to introduce younger primary-school pupils to the history and value of the Polish złoty. It has proved very popular, so a new edition was created this year.
At the start of the project, we interviewed educators who run sessions at the NBP Money Centre and at other institutions. We learned, for example, that children do not always grasp the abstract concept of monetary value. They find it much easier to understand the physical quantity of money, such as the number of coins.
This observation led to the idea of a coin-changing board. It provides a simple visual way to show that a single 5-złoty coin has the same value as several coins of lower denominations.
The workshops are now delivered by educators at the NBP Money Centre and its regional branches.
The project is part of a wider series of teaching resources developed to support children’s financial education.
